Software Architecture Agent

The Challenge

Every initiative at a large superannuation fund passes through the architecture team. Before work can be funded and scheduled, an architect produces a Solution Canvas, the document that sets out how a proposed change will actually be built and what it touches.

The work arrives in waves. At quarterly planning the whole organisation needs canvases at once, and a small team absorbs the entire load in a compressed window. Under that pressure the canvases still get written, but the thinking behind them gets squeezed, and a rushed canvas creates rework downstream in the projects that depend on it. The bottleneck was not effort or capability. It was that the most valuable technical judgement in the pipeline was being spent on assembling documents.

We were engaged to build an agent that drafts Solution Canvases for the architecture team.

The Solution

We built the agent on Microsoft Copilot, tooling the organisation already had licensed and running, and targeted it directly at the Solution Canvas drafting job.

The agent takes an existing Business Value Canvas or discovery record, extracts what it can, then interviews the architect to fill the gaps rather than guessing at them. It iterates on the design with the architect in the loop, drafts the canvas, and publishes the finished artefact straight into Confluence where the rest of the organisation already looks for it. It reads from the enterprise architecture repository, the issue tracker and the documentation platform, so the drafts start from the organisation's actual current state rather than from a blank page.

The Outcome

The agent is in production and in daily use by the architecture team, in their hands for the quarterly planning cycle it was built for.

Delivered alongside it: documentation, source code, and five enablement sessions, three demonstrations so the architects could get value immediately, and two technical walkthroughs so the client's own engineering and QA teams could take ownership cleanly.
